As the year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and see where you are with your health and fitness goals. Maybe you started the year with a bang but dipped in and out, or maybe you’re right on track! But for many, that’s not the case. Some of you maybe heavier than you were this time last year, feeling low and finding it hard to get motivated. Most of us have good intentions, but commitment can flounder when life gets in the way… which it always does. So how so we snap out of this rut, make a fresh start and stay on track?
Beginning a new chapter in your life can be very challenging, especially if you have tried and failed in the past. A part of your mind screams, “I’m not ready to make the commitment”. Another part kicks in, “What if I try and give up? AGAIN? I’ll be so embarrassed if people know I failed”. These thoughts are so common, but many of us don’t realise the serious impact they have on our ability to move forward. What we need to remember is that all of us have that little niggling voice at the back of our heads (maybe its difficult to hear, but it is there!) that’s saying, “Imagine how I’ll feel when I reach my goal”.
The first step to a fresh start in your health and wellbeing is to completely ignore all of this negative self-talk. Of course, that’s easier said than done and it does take some practice. The best way to counter this is to crank up the volume on the part of you that believes you can do it. Start to tell yourself every day you are completely capable of achieving your goals, that you are already seeing results and are thankful you started. Even if you don’t believe it yet, or secretly think you will fail, day after day your brain will slowly rewire itself and eliminate the self defeating thoughts that keep us stuck.
Another really useful tool is to write down your motivations. Why do you want to change your diet and exercise? Do you want to look better? Feel better? Or did your doctor say its necessary? No matter what your reasons are, we all need something to work towards. Hitting a few bumps along the way is normal, but keeping your motivations clear is especially important on those cold, dark mornings or lazy Sunday afternoons when we feel like throwing in the towel completely.
Another vital area in making a fresh start is taking time for yourself. So many people rush from the kids to work to making dinner and barely have time to catch their breath. Give yourself the time you deserve to rest. Start by taking at least 10 minutes every day to just sit and do nothing – that means no TV, no talking on the phone, no scrolling on the laptop! We are bombarded with information all day every day. We need to give ourselves a chance to stop and appreciate the changes we are making. Take this a step further and each week treat yourself to a new book, a cinema date with friends, new workout gear or a good long walk alone. We can’t pour from an empty cup, so be sure to follow some of these self care habits to maintain a sustainable lifestyle.
Many of us are apprehensive to take that first step back into a healthy lifestyle if we’ve had a negative experience in the past. At Fitness4Life, we always promote and encourage a healthy mindset among our clients. Following a standardised meal plan and exercise regime isn’t enough. We need to train ourselves into a more positive way of thinking to see the best results, especially in the long term. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Just start by taking small steps, introducing a new change each week. You’ll be surprised how quickly it all adds up!
